An Anglo-Boer War rarity!! A small booklet to fit into the pocket of a soldier. The size 10 cm x 16 cm. Only the printed pages are numbered to a total of 39 pages. The blank pages to the left not numbered.

The outside cover is also the title pages and reads: CONFIDENTIAL. Boer War Army List, Cape Colony District, November 30, 1901. NOTE: Blank pages are provided for Corrections and Additions. One Corrected Copy should be returned to Intelligence Capetown by the 31st January, 1902, in order that a New Edition may be printed. C Ross, Capt., D.A.A.G. Intelligence. Capetown.

The contents pages has three subdivisions: Alphabetical Index of Names (pages 2-5) Index of Boer Commandos (pages 6-8) and Boer Commandos, Description of Commandants and Subordinates (Page 9-39). Also a total of 5 stamps in ink throughout the book with the detail of: B Division, T.T.P. Sergeant's Room.

The content reveals a very interesting biography of some of the well-known leaders. On Maritz's Commando:

MARITZ, Hermanus Marney (Known as Manne Maritz)Head Commandant. Transvaal Burgher, originally came from Griqualand West, Kimberley, supposed to be a native of Colesberg, but latterly from Johannesburg. 5 feet 10 inches in height; strongly built; round face; broad shoulders; brownish complexion; brown hair and small dark moustache; and light pointed beard on point of chin; deep set blue eyes with mole under right eye; pointed nose and is knock-kneed. About 32 years old. Unmarried. Can neither read or write, but speaks English well; he is daring and bears a good character, and is reported on all sides as a good and energetic leader and commands great respect from his men, whom he flogs on the least provocation. Rides chestnut gelding in splendid condition. Uses a British military saddle and armed with Mauser carbine and revolver. Wears putty leggings; reported that he has two complete suits of khaki, one tunic with stars and crown on, but he only wears khaki on certain occasions.

Employed as Sanitary Official in Johannesburg, and at one time belonged to the police of that city. Was with De Wet in early part of war, belonging to Theron's Scouts, later with Kretzinger and last of all with Malan, who sent him into Calvinia District, with despatches, after which promoted him from Burgher to Commandant of the Rebels. Has been fighting since outbreak of war.

Wear to the spine, paper loss left bottom of front cover, three water marks on front cover as seen in picture, name in ink inside of previous owner.
