The 28 illustrated introductory pp are followed by more than 90 pp of Mary Maytham Kidd's botanical illustrations and the same number of opposite pages of keys to the illustrations, which are arranged as the plants flower between January and December. These are followed in turn by some 20 pp of indexes and appendixes. General Smuts's original foreword is retained, while the botanical names of the 1950 edition have been revised by Pauline Fairall.

He regularly visits Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and offers to deliver heavy or valuable books or sets to these cities on such visits.
