Description:
Important autobiography including life in Cape Town in the 1850s and 60s, after Kotze returned after five years in London to practice at the bar in Cape Town for three years; "The immediate future seemed full of promise, until Lord Carnarvon, as Secretary of State, conceived the idea of confederating the Colonies and the two Republican States of South Africa under the British flag... Shepstone was commissioned to annex the Transvaal to the British Dominions," [Preface]; the Presidency of Mr T.F.Burgers & the annexation of the Transvaal, the Boer War of 1880-81 & the siege of Pretoria; with many b/w photographs and illustrations; first volume, 827pp.including appendix and index; second volume, 306pp. Condition of both volumes is very good, blue cloth boards with black spine titles, front inner hinge of vol.1 cracked, end-papers and edges browned and spotted, dust-jackets good but chipped and creased along edges, and spines faded and browned.
