An intriguing book exploring, in nineteen chapters, the psychology of the Transvaal Boer, and 'Colonial ignorance of the Transvaal in its early days', many chapters dealing with the early mining claims on the Rand reefs; as well as notes on the 1884 convention, diggings in the Cape (De Kaap goldfields) and Transvaal including Nelmapius the 'claim jumper', Charlie 'the Reefer', and extensive notes and observations on Kruger himself (including his snubbing of a Kaffir Military band) and many of the gold and diamond mining activities in Cape and Transvaal, chapter 14 'The Boer and the Native - Secrets of the Race hatred', sidelights on slavery, Boer methods, Albesini the white Chief, lost and derelict reefs, why rich reefs were neglected, alluvial finds near Johannesburg, why Boers did not encourage prospecting, etc... and many insights into the life of Paul Kruger.
