Auction of the Finest Cape Wines. Catalogue. Nederburg 14 February 1976

Anon

Description:

The catalogue comprises 60 pp of tumbled English and Afrikaans text in card wraps printed on 4 sides. This copy carries the previous owner's tasting notes in ink on the seven cases of wine he bought at this auction. This copy would have been rated fine without the notes, which, however, represent much of the value of the lot.

With one exception, the prices noted were the hammer prices per case of 12 bottles. The wines bought were 1974 Montagne Riesling (R17 per case), 1974 Johann Graue Estate Riesling (R16), 1974 Johann Graue Estate Steen (R15), 1933 Nederburg Paar Late Harvest (R19), 1974 Johann Graue Estate Private Bin S312 (R21), 1974 Nederburg Private Bin S333 (R21), 1974 Nederburg Paar Edelkeur (R22 for a case of 24 half-bottles) and 1991 Johann Graue Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (R45).

The taster's notes for Edelkeur: "As good as remembered. Buy quickly! Excellent. He [the auctioneer, Patrick Grubb] says like Tokai, Trockenbeerenauslese, Sauternes. Harvested at noble rot or botrytis stage."

This was the second year of the Nederburg auctions, and the last at which members of the public were able to bid. The wines on sale comprised one-five-thousandth of the South African production of noble wines in the 1975 season. It seems remarkable that the prices of similar wines today show an average escalation of some 3000 per cent over a period of only 35 years.
