Apprenticeship at Kuruman. Being the Journals and Letters of Robert and Mary Moffat 1820-1828 (1951)

Schapera, I (ed)

Description:

This is No 5 in the Oppenheimer series of Central African archives. "Apprenticeship" refers to the Moffats' early life as missionaries, Robert being only 24 at the start of the period covered by these journals and letters. (Robert's later journals, covering the period 1829-1860, were edited by J P R Wallis and published in two volumes in 1945 as The Matabele Journals of Robert Moffat - No 1 in the Oppenheimer series.)

The upper front corner of the red cloth-boards, gilt to the front and spine, is bumped but the cloth remains unworn throughout. The spine is faded (see image). The binding is firm. An ownership name and date are on the front free endpaper and a bookseller label is on the front paste-down. The plain endpapers and the frontispiece are lightly foxed but some early and late leaves, including the title-page, contents pages, index pages and the folding map, are heavily foxed. The upper page-edge is gilt, while the fore and lower edges are foxed and rough cut, with some leaves remaining uncut. The contents - xxxi + 308 pp of text, appendixes and index plus frontispiece and folding map - are complete and unmarked.
