The historical period covered includes both British occupations of the Cape.

The original red cloth-boards, black and gilt to the panel, black to the spine, are rubbed and chipped but serviceable. The binding has loosened but is cracked only between sections 15 and 16. The printed endpapers have small areas of red moisture staining and there are two owners' names on the front free endpaper. iv + 249 pp of text + 2 pp of publisher's information + 3 inserted monochrome plates, undiscoloured and clean except for a very few pencil markings.
