A unique and authentic collection of BOER WAR relics - Recently unearthed inside an old British fortress in the heart of the Great Karoo. Includes an extremely rare badge.
The King's Royal Rifle Corps
Description:
The items displayed herewith were recently unearthed inside a small Boer War fortress in the heart of the Great Karoo. (all items are still encrusted in the actual earth from the site) The badge discovered is conclusive proof that the fortress was occupied by The King's Royal Rifle Corps, who according to historical records were engaged in active service in South Africa from the onset of the 2nd Boer War. To add accurate historical value to the collection, full details of the find, as well as the exact location, will gladly be given to the successful bidder. Soil samples from the exact location and surrounding gravel (for display purposes) can also be arranged on request.
The King's Regiment (Liverpool) was one of the oldest infantry regiments of the British Army, having been formed in 1685 and numbered as the 8th (The King's) Regiment of Foot in 1751. Unlike most British infantry regiments, which were associated with a county, the King's represented the city of Liverpool, one of only four regiments affiliated to a city in the British Army[3] After 273 years of continuous existence, the regiment was amalgamated with the Manchesters in 1958.
The King's notably saw active service in the Second Boer War, the two world wars, and the Korean War.
After the Napoleonic Wars the regiment received a new title: first, in 1815, its name was changed to The Duke of York's Own Rifle Corps and then, in 1830, to the King's Royal Rifle Corps(KRRC). In 1858 the Rifle Depot at Winchester was made their headquarters. During the rest of the 1800s the unit was active in China, Canada (Wolseley Expedition), Afghanistan, India, Burma and South Africa. The regiment was deployed during the Second Boer War from the outset playing a key role in the first battle at Talana Hill.
