A Pictorial History of South Africa and the Transvaal and With Roberts to the Transvaal (no date)

Robinson, Cdr C N, R N (editor)

Description:

This book has an anomalous front cover. The book's actual title is "A Pictorial History of South Africa and the Transvaal" and it is divided into two parts, bound together, of which the second has the subtitle "With Roberts in the Transvaal", which was the cover wording chosen by the publishers (see images).

Part 1 - frontispiece of Queen Victoria + 122 pp of coated stock - claims "Nearly two hundred illustrations and several specially prepared maps"; while Part 2 - frontispiece of Field Marshal Roberts + 128 pp - is more modest with "Nearly two hundred illustrations and several maps". The maps, indeed, are excellent. There is no index.

Although undated, the book may have come out as early as late-1900. The red cloth-boards, black-embossed to all three faces, have a little edge and corner wear. Even if no longer tight, the binding remains flexible and still serves its purpose. Both front and back one-sided black endpapers are unblemished. The gilding to all three page edges remains bright. The book itself is unmarked and in very good condition.
