Two volumes, unpaginated, half title page in each volume, portrait of Dr Johnson in volume 1 engraved by Heath after the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, contemporary diced calf sides with a gilt border, rebacked with the original spines laid down (the spines are chipped and there is some loss of the original leather and gilt titling), marbled edges and endpapers, green cloth hinges, bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper in volume 2 – a bookplate has been rather crudely removed from the front paste-down endpaper in volume 1, binder’s ticket on the front-free endpaper of volume I – Bound by J. Bohn, Frith Street, Soho, London, two pages in volume 1 are working loose and the edges are dust soiled, otherwise apart from some occasional light browning the contents are crisp.
