A BREATH FROM THE VELDT

Millais (J.G.)

Description:

First edition: 236 pages, electro-etched frontispiece, title page vignette and 12 electro-etched plates, numerous text illustrations, pictorial cream buckram titled in black and spine and titled and decorated with sable and kudu heads on the upper cover – the buckram is lightly soiled but not browned as is often the case, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, all the pages and plates are loose (the original binding was made with gutta-percha – a latex solution derived from the Palaquium tree – which over time dries and cracks. Almost all books bound in this way in the 19th century now need the attention of a bookbinder), foxing on the electro-etched plates, the contents pages, which are printed on coated paper, are in good condition.

Czech (Kenneth P.) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, pages 114/115, 'Highlighted by the author's detailed illustrations, this work represents Millais' journey towards the Limpopo River with excursions to hunt kudu, reedbuck, waterbuck, sable, and roan. Near the Nuanetsi River, he bagged buffalo and Zebra. After leaving the Limpopo, he collected trophy kudu, as well as lion and leopard. A most readable and visually exciting book of African travel and big game hunting.'

Mendelssohn 2:13 'The first edition was published in 1895 and soon became very rare, and the 'Daily Telegraph', commenting on the publication, stated that it was 'a classic of the shooting world.''
