Description:

(Kolben, Tachard, Prevost) A group of 6 Eighteenth Century copperplate engravings depicting animals and sea life of the Cape of Good Hope and elsewhere, as originally published in the works of Kolben, Tachard and Prevost (c. 1750).
Each engraved surface measures on average 125 by190mm. All are in good condition. The references below correlate to the entries in Kennedy ‘Catalogue of Prints in the Africana Museum, Johannesburg’, 1975/6.
The group comprises.
A.‘Petit Lezard du Cap tiré de Tachard’ and ‘Grand Lezard du Cap tiré de Tachard’. (T 20a). The first of these prints has an early representation of Table Mountain, the Lion’s Head and Devil’s Peak in the background.
B.(Animals of the Cape of Good Hope).(K 52)
C.‘Gedierte aan de Kaap’ de Goede Hoop’. (K52b) A variant of B above.
D.(Sirens and other Monsters). (K 68a)
E.‘Sirene & autres Monstres’. Meermin en andere Gedrochten, in Afrika’. (not in Kennedy) A variant of D above.
