"The publication of this book on the foundation and history of the Nieuwe Republiek, 1884 to 1886, and the pioneers of Vryheid marks a new departure from the usual work of the Museum . This book pays tribute to the pioneers of a part of the province which has contributed much towards the general welfare of the Republic of South Africa. . Most of the 1824 settlers of Natal were intent upon trade and they were followed into Natal by the Voortrekkers who were farmers at heart. Similarly the pioneers of the Nieuwe Republiek held mainly to the land for their livelihoods and the story of the infant state is here presented through the medium of the Nieuwe Republiek Staats Courant, now appearing for the first time in translated form.".
