Shrikes of Southern Africa- True shrikes, helmet-shrikes and bush-shrikes, including the batises and Black-throated Wattle-eye. Text by Tony Harris, with illustrations by Graeme Arnott.The book is divided into two main sections.

The first of these-the Introduction-provides a discussion of certain basic biological theories by which shrikes are defined and classified, followed by a short description of methodology; a history of shrike classification; a proposed new classification; a discussion of the probable origins of shrikes and their relationships to other birds; and outline of the principles of animal communication; and . finally. a general account of the communication behaviour of shrikes.

The second section forms the body of the book and contains descriptions of the basic biology of the 32 shrike species occurring in southern Africa. Each species is illustrated by a large full-colour plate depicting the bird in a typical example of its preferred habitat. Most of the plates are supported by at least one colour sketch illustrating additional details of posture, behaviour, plummage, colour variation, structure and nests. At the end of each account there is a summary for quick reference, which includes two distribution maps. Frontispiece- 224 pages text. FINE- BOXED.
