Dr Eric Axelson, Research Officer, Ernest Oppenheimer Institute of Portuguese Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, and a Vogal of the Centro de Estudos Historicos Ultramarinos, Lisbon, began his researches into the history of the Portuguese in south-east Africa in 1936. He soon became well known for his discovery of the farthest stone pillar which Bartolomeu Dias erected in 1488. In this book he details the 17th Century activities of the Portuguese in south-east Africa, from their base at Mocambique up the Zambezi into Mashonaland, and on the Mombasa coast. An appendix summarizes survivors'accounts of the shipwrecks on the coast of southern Africa during this period. Fold-out map of Monomotapa between pp. 22/3; 226pp. including index.
