The peronality of Moshesh, the great founder of the Basuto Nation, the course of their history and the nature of their countr, have together left a perculiar and indelible stamp on the Basuto. Moshesh was not only a leader in war, he was also of all nineteenth Africans in counsel, the wisest, the most far-sighted and the most moderate. His influence can still be felt all through Basutoland. The history of the Basuto up to 1868 was that of a stern struggle for existence. The country is a mountain land; and the Basuto love their home as dearly as the Swiss or the Scottish Highlanders love theirs, and are as prepared to defend their kingdom.
The Paramount Chief was right and one proof of this is the number of Basuto who were willing to fight at the other end of the world in the King's cause and in a war for freedom. They proved the strength among them of the traditional Basuto loyalty to the Crown and of the traditional love of liberty.
